South St. Paul Gas Station Robbery Suspect Sentenced to More Than Five Years in Prison
SOUTH ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA - The man charged in a February 2024 armed robbery at a Speedway gas station in South St. Paul has been convicted and sentenced to prison, according to court records released this week.
Anthony Rubio, who was arrested one day after the February 8 incident, pleaded guilty to one count of Aggravated Robbery in the First Degree. On June 4, 2025, a judge sentenced Rubio to 67 months (5 years and 7 months) in prison, to be served at the Minnesota Correctional Facility in St. Cloud. The sentence includes 483 days of credit for time already served in custody.
This sentence represents a downward durational departure from state sentencing guidelines, as part of a plea agreement. Under Minnesota law, Rubio must serve two-thirds of the sentence in prison, with the remaining third on supervised release.
Rubio was arrested on February 9, 2024, after police executed a search warrant at his South St. Paul residence. Surveillance video from the robbery had shown the suspect holding a serrated steak knife and demanding cash from a gas station employee. Investigators were able to match Rubio to the suspect using the footage, clothing, and a dark blue Toyota sedan seen leaving the scene.
At the time of his arrest, officers recovered clothing items matching the suspect's description and a case of steak knives similar to the one used in the robbery. Rubio also had prior felony convictions, including Assault with a Dangerous Weapon and Aggravated Robbery involving a firearm.
In a separate case, Rubio was also convicted and sentenced on June 4 for disorderly conduct – brawling or fighting stemming from an incident on May 14, 2025. He was sentenced to 90 days in the Dakota County Jail, with credit for all 90 days already served.
Rubio remains in custody and will be transferred to the state prison to begin serving his sentence.
