Heatwave Weekend in Minnesota with a Chance for Severe Storms
Written by: Markie Kelly
The dog days of summer have finally arrived in Minnesota, and we will certainly feel it this weekend! According to the NWS Twin Cities, temperatures will rise into the lower 90s across portions of western and southern Minnesota on Saturday, and heat advisories could be coming soon. It won’t be a dry heat either. Dewpoint temperatures look to rise into the low 70s, which will make it feel tropical!
Heat won't be the only concern in Minnesota this weekend; severe storms also look possible, with a few rounds of storms possible on Saturday. However, there remains some uncertainty as to where these storms will develop. The heat will bring us plenty of instability, even to an extreme level, but the heat will also create a strong cap. If that cap can break, severe storms will certainly be possible, and one of the main threats could be severe wind gusts. Isolated large hail and even a tornado or two can't be ruled out. Additionally, heavy rain and localized flash flooding are also possible.
The Storm Prediction Center has much of Minnesota in a Slight Risk(2/5) on Saturday and a Marginal Risk (1/5) on Sunday. The severe threat right now is conditional, but we will better understand what could happen this weekend.
