Record-Warm September - Drought Grip Twin Cities
TWIN CITIES, MINNESOTA - September 2024 will become one of the warmest on record in the Twin Cities, averaging around 6.6F above normal, and one of the driest, being 2.87 inches below normal. September felt a lot like July, except we didn’t see much weather action around the Twin Cities metro. We only saw three days with 0.01 inches or more of rain, for a total of 0.06 inches of precipitation for the month! September 2023 had the same trend, hot and dry, but we were deep in a drought. Spring/Summer this year was wet, and we haven’t had to worry about a drought until now. A good chunk of the state is in abnormally dry conditions, and we have a few spots of moderate drought. Unfortunately, those spots might worsen with our weather pattern, with no soaking rains in sight. The Climate Prediction Center has the next few weeks outlined in the below-average category. It doesn’t mean we won't see rain, but the chances of appreciable rainfall in the first half of October aren't good.
Now that we’ve got the bad news out of the way, we have some news to look forward to. This heat we’ve been experiencing looks to take a break after Monday. A cold front is on the way and will bring some much cooler temps to the Twin Cities, but it will have a high on Tuesday at around 65! The rest of the week looks to trend around seasonally normal temps. We will have to wait out our lull and hope some weather action comes around later in the month.
