Fatal Crash Involving Motorcycle and State Patrol Under Investigation by Minneapolis Police Department
MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA — A fatal motorcycle crash involving the Minnesota State Patrol is currently under investigation by the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD). The incident occurred on June 14th, at approximately 4:00 P.M., near Cedar Avenue and 51st Street East.
According to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara, the incident began when Minnesota State Patrol troopers initiated a pursuit of a motorcycle. The pursuit was terminated once the motorcycle exited the highway, but the State Patrol maintained visual contact with the vehicle through their helicopter. Despite the cessation of the ground pursuit, the motorcycle subsequently collided with a fully marked State Patrol vehicle.
The rider, identified as a man in his mid-20s, suffered potentially life-threatening injuries and was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) for treatment. Tragically, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner notified MPD today that the rider has succumbed to his injuries. The Medical Examiner's office will release the rider's name along with the official cause and manner of death.
Due to the crash occurring on city streets, the Minneapolis Police Traffic Division has taken the lead in the investigation, with support from the Minnesota State Patrol. The MPD will be focusing on the crash investigation, while the Minnesota State Patrol will handle aspects related to the pursuit.
