Structure Fire in Inver Grove Heights Under Investigation, One Arrest Made

INVER GROVE HEIGHTS, MINNESOTA – A structure fire broke out early Wednesday morning, May 21, 2025, in Inver Grove Heights. State and local authorities are investigating the cause, and one suspect is now in custody.

According to a press release from the City of Inver Grove Heights, emergency crews were dispatched at approximately 3:24 a.m. to a residential fire near Delaney Avenue and 70th Street. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that the blaze had originated in a bedroom and quickly spread throughout the single-family home. Fire crews from both Inver Grove Heights and South Metro Fire Departments responded and collaborated to extinguish the fire, which took more than 30 minutes to control. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

The Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Division is leading the investigation, supported by the Inver Grove Heights Fire Marshal and Police Department. MHealth Ambulance was also present at the scene for precautionary medical support.

Authorities have identified and arrested a suspect in connection with the fire. Nicholas Jeffrey Smith, 35, of Inver Grove Heights, was taken into custody without incident late Wednesday morning. He has been booked into the Dakota County Jail on suspicion of Felony 1st Degree Arson of a Dwelling.

Authorities emphasize that the suspect is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. As new information becomes available, further updates will be shared.
