Red Flag Warning Issued for Twin Cities Metro as Critical Fire Weather Conditions Persist

TWIN CITIES, MINNESOTA - The National Weather Service in the Twin Cities has issued a Red Flag Warning for portions of eastern Minnesota, including the Twin Cities, as dangerously dry, hot, and windy conditions are expected to significantly increase the risk of wildfires today. The warning remains in effect from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. CDT Sunday, with additional fire weather concerns likely through Monday and Tuesday.

Record-breaking temperatures in the upper 80s to low 90s, humidity levels as low as 15 percent, and strong southerly winds between 15 and 25 mph, gusting up to 35 mph, will create the perfect environment for fires to ignite and spread rapidly.

“This combination of heat, dry air, and gusty winds is a classic setup for critical fire weather,” the NWS alert stated. “Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged.”

The Red Flag Warning is a signal to residents and land managers that wildfire conditions are not just elevated, but potentially extreme. The warning also highlights that this threat could persist through the start of the week, with continued hot, dry, and windy weather expected Monday and Tuesday.

What Residents Should Know:

  • Avoid all outdoor burning. This includes brush fires, campfires, and any other open flame activities.

  • Be vigilant with outdoor equipment. Even a spark from a lawn mower or chainsaw can start a wildfire under these conditions.

  • Report any signs of smoke or fire immediately to emergency services.

The National Weather Service urges everyone in the affected areas to stay informed and prepared, especially those living near grassy fields or wooded areas.
