Snowboard Theft at Local Ski Hill: Arrest Made, Boards Recovered
BURNSVILLE, MINNESOTA - Burnsville Officers were called out to the Buck Hill Ski Hill around 3:52 PM and 4:21 PM on Tuesday, January 2, 2024, for reports of two snowboards that had been stolen.
According to the criminal complaint from the Dakota County Attorney's Office, one of the victim's parents, the snowboard was placed on one of the ski racks outside the chalet's main door, and when they came back 10 minutes later, their board was gone. Per the criminal complaint, it was reported that the victim's parent went to Pawn America in Burnsville, Minnesota, to see if the board might have been brought there. The sales manager from the store confirmed that someone had just brought in two snowboards. One board matched their child's board, and the other board reportedly matched the description of the stolen second board. This information was passed along to the officers, and an Investigator with Burnsville Police looked further into these transactions.
The criminal complaint states that through their investigation, Investigators found the boards were sold to Pawn America around 3:39 PM on January 2nd. They linked this transaction to 18-year-old Jarret Minchow of Farmington, Minnesota. Investigators then reviewed surveillance video from Buck Hill Ski Hill, which confirmed that Minchow had stolen the boards separately and taken them to his vehicle. Surveillance from Pawn America was also reviewed, ensuring Minchow was the same individual. Police recovered the boards and returned them to the victims.
According to the criminal complaint, officers with the Farmington Police Department went to Minchow's residence and arrested him without incident, then transported him to the Burnsville Police Department. Following receiving his Miranda Rights, Minchow admitted to police that he had stolen the snowboards and sold them to Pawn America. He told officers he did it because he needed money to insure and register his vehicle since he didn't have plates. He said it was a "crime of opportunity" since he was already at Buck Hill to snowboard.
The two snowboards were valued at $800 and $1,136.99, totaling $1,936.99.
The Dakota County Attorney's Office charged Jarret Minchow with Felony Theft (Aggregating) (Over $1,000 up to $5,000), which comes with a sentence of 0 to 5 years and/or a fine of $3,000 to $10,000.
