A Portion of Highway 13 Closed Due to Slope Failure in Mendota Heights

Mendota Heights, Minnesota – Last night, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) closed Highway 13 between Wachtler Avenue and Sylvandale Road in Mendota Heights due to a significant slope failure. This unexpected closure is projected to last until at least August 3, 2024, as emergency maintenance activities are underway to address the issue.

The Mendota Heights Police Department announced the road closure via a Facebook post, urging residents and commuters to avoid the area. "Please be prepared for confused drivers in the Ivy Falls area," the department noted, adding that extra patrols will be on duty to manage the situation.

The slope failure is likely a consequence of the unusually heavy rainfall the region has experienced this spring. Observations indicate that across this region we have received between 12.50 and 14.55 inches of rainfall since January 1, which is about 3-3.5 inches above the average for this time of year. Notably, the first four days of June have already seen precipitation levels about half an inch above average, with more rain forecasted for tonight.

Total rainfall across the region since January 1, 2024.

While MnDOT is still investigating the exact cause of the slope failure, the excessive rainfall is a primary suspect. Workers inspecting the drainage systems in the area are currently assessing the situation. The additional rainfall expected tonight could potentially exacerbate the slope failure, further complicating the maintenance efforts. We have contacted MnDOT for more information on this incident and await a reply. We will provide an update once more information is available.

In the meantime, residents and commuters are advised to seek alternative routes. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing situation.
