UPDATED: Vehicle Crashes into Building in Lakeville, Injuries Reported

Updated on August 9, 2024 at 9:40 AM.

Latest Update: According to a GoFundMe set up by a friend of the family, the crash was caused after the oldest son, who was driving the van, had a seizure and lost control of the vehicle. It was reported on the GoFundMe page that the driver sustained multiple fractures and, once stable, will need three surgeries. They report he is currently in an induced coma. The other juvenile in the car, who was in serious condition, was reported to be a 5-year-old and reportedly sustained a severely fractured arm and a possible back fracture.

August 7th Update: Following a call with the Lakeville Police Department, we have confirmed that four people were in the van at the time of the crash and that all the injuries in this incident came from those in the vehicle. There were no injuries in the business. All four individuals were taken to HCMC via ALF Ambulance services. There was one adult and three juveniles in the van. The adult driver of the vehicle is said to be in critical condition, and a 5-year-old is said to be in serious condition. The other two juveniles were reported only to have minor injuries.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, with the Minnesota State Patrol assisting the Lakeville Police Department with accident reconstruction. At this time, the Lakeville Police Chief says the cause of the crash was likely due to a medical issue based on witness recounts. Based on witness accounts, the police Chief says the vehicle was estimated to be going over 70 mph at the time of the crash. Again, this is unofficial, and a final determination will be released following a thorough investigation and accident reconstruction.

According to the police chief, while the building was damaged in the accident, there was no significant damage. The majority of the damage appears to have been to a retaining wall.

We will continue to provide updates on this story as more information is made available to us.

ORIGINAL STORY - LAKEVILLE, MINNESOTA: At approximately 3:32 PM on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, emergency personnel, including Lakeville Fire, Lakeville Police, and ALF Medics, responded to a significant accident involving a vehicle crashing into the side of the Pleasant Hills Saddle Shop on Kendrick Avenue.

Initial reports suggest that a van traveling northbound on Kendrick Avenue possibly lost control while navigating a bend. The vehicle collided with a retaining wall before crashing into the building. The cause of the crash is currently under investigation.

Emergency officials have confirmed that at least four individuals sustained injuries in the incident, with the possibility of a fifth victim. The exact number of people involved and their locations—whether inside the vehicle or the business—remain unclear. Unconfirmed reports indicate some children might have been in the vehicle during the crash. The extent of the injuries is unknown, but three separate ambulances were dispatched to the scene.

Officials on-site are assessing the building's structural integrity and considering whether a structural engineer should inspect the damage caused by the impact.

Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available from the authorities.
