Operation Safe Summer III Yields Largest Number of Illegal Gun Confiscations
MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA—Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara announced today, Wednesday, August 7, 2024, that Operation Safe Summer III has resulted in the largest seizure of illegal firearms to date. During the weeklong operation, which was conducted from July 29th to August 3rd, law enforcement officials confiscated 45 firearms and made 98 arrests.
Chief O’Hara highlighted the broader success of the operation, noting the seizure of over 2,300 grams (5 lbs.) of narcotics, 1,200 fentanyl pills, and $10,000. The coordinated effort, which involved multiple law enforcement and prosecution partners, continues to focus on targeting violent individuals who disproportionately impact Minneapolis neighborhoods.
"The proliferation of illegal guns and narcotics has been an ongoing issue for the city of Minneapolis. I am incredibly proud of the work of our officers and all of our partner agencies to make a lasting impact on gun violence and narcotics activity in the city," said Chief O’Hara. "Thank you to all our partners, and all members of the MPD who participated in the operation for your continued work to ensure the safety of Minneapolis."
Operation Safe Summer has been consistently successful over the past three years. In 2023, the operation recovered 38 firearms and made 100 arrests. Similarly, in 2022, 38 firearms were recovered, and 97 arrests were made.
Chief O’Hara attributed the success of this year's operation to the collaboration among various agencies, including the ATF, FBI, HSI, U.S. Attorney’s Office, BCA, MN State Patrol, Metro Transit Police Department, Hennepin County Probation, Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, Hennepin County Attorney’s Office, and the Minneapolis Park Police Department.
Operation Safe Summer remains a crucial initiative in the fight against gun violence and narcotics activity in the Twin Cities Metro, demonstrating the power of unified law enforcement efforts.
