MAPLE GROVE MN: Twenty-six people were arrested Monday night after a protest near the SpringHill Suites hotel in Maple Grove escalated into what police described as unlawful assembly and riotous conduct.

According to the Maple Grove Police Department, officers, with assistance from multiple law enforcement agencies, responded to the protest on Jan. 26, 2026, after property damage and violence were reported. Authorities declared the gathering an unlawful assembly, saying the activity was no longer protected under the First Amendment.

Police said dispersal orders were issued and individuals were given clear instructions and time to leave the area before arrests were made.

Of those arrested, 13 people were booked on gross misdemeanor riot charges, while another 13 were arrested for misdemeanor unlawful assembly. Two individuals face an additional charge of obstructing legal process. One person remains under investigation for property damage after fleeing apprehension, according to police.

The protest was reportedly directed at the presence of federal agents staying at hotels across the state. Police said their priority during the incident was the safety of those in the area, including hotel staff, guests, and nearby property.

“While we respect First Amendment rights, we will not tolerate property damage or violence in our community,” the department said in a statement.

Maple Grove police worked alongside the Minnesota State Patrol, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, Hennepin Public Order Group, Brooklyn Park Police Department, and Maple Grove Public Works and Fire Departments.
