MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA - A semi-truck carrying ammunition rolled over late Friday morning on I-94 at the Lowry Tunnel, causing significant disruption in both directions of the highway.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the crash occurred just before 11 a.m. when the driver of the semi appears to have lost control of the truck, overturned, and then hit a tunnel wall, splitting the truck in half. The driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries, and no other vehicles were involved in the incident.
While the crash occurred in the westbound lanes, debris spilled across the eastbound lanes when the truck split in half, prompting authorities to close travel on I-94 in both directions while crews work to clean up the crash and the resulting mess. While hazardous materials are prohibited on this route through the tunnel, the Minnesota State Patrol has confirmed in this particular case that the ammunition being transported by the trucker was permitted through the tunnel.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash.
