Local Firefighter and Neighbor Jumps into Action During Second Alarm Structure Fire in Apple Valley, Minnesota

APPLE VALLEY, MINNESOTA—A structure fire erupted late Tuesday night, May 7, 2024, in Apple Valley, Minnesota, sending plumes of smoke and fire billowing into the air and prompting a swift response from local fire departments. The incident, which occurred at approximately 10:52 PM in the 13100 block of Glenhaven Avenue, drew firefighters from Apple Valley and assistance from the Rosemount Fire Department.
According to authorities, everyone inside the residence, including the family dog, escaped. One occupant sustained a minor injury during the evacuation process. The fire's origin is suspected to be the garage, though investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause. It was reported that eyewitnesses heard sounds resembling explosions during the blaze, but with cars and tires within the garage, those might have been tied to those reports.
Fire officials said the fire spread from the garage into the house, through the attic, and into the mudroom. Fortunately, the prompt response from emergency services prevented the flames from causing significant damage to the rest of the home. The incident necessitated a second alarm response, with additional resources summoned to the scene to contain the fire's spread.
As investigations continue into the cause of the fire, residents are reminded to prioritize fire safety measures within their homes, including regular maintenance of electrical systems and proper storage of flammable materials. We will provide updates if the cause of the fire is determined.
Update - Local Firefighter and Neighbor Helps Save Home
This morning, we learned of the heroic efforts of a neighbor and local South Metro firefighter, Josh Nelson, who jumped into action late last night to help save his neighbor’s home and a few family members after returning home from celebrating his 40th birthday. According to Nelson, he had just pulled into the driveway when he heard explosions. He said he thought they were fireworks at first, but when he went out to check, he saw the fire coming from his neighbor’s garage and jumped into action.
After ensuring that 9-1-1 was called, Nelson reportedly entered the home without protective gear to help evacuate a few family members who were still inside. Nelson said he also closed a service door between the house and garage to help prevent the fire from spreading to the rest of the residence and stop the smoke from pouring into the home, as he reported the home already had heavy smoke. Nelson then prepared the nearest fire hydrant for the incoming Apple Valley Fire crews and briefed the Apple Valley Fire Chief when he arrived.
We commend Josh for his heroic actions, which likely prevented the fire from doing more damage and saved lives late Tuesday night. We also thank his friends who contacted us about his heroic actions!
