Lakeville teens charged following the reckless discharge of a firearm on school property
LAKEVILLE, MINNESOTA - Two Lakeville teens have officially been charged with multiple felonies following the reckless discharge of a firearm on school property back in March that struck a neighboring home.
According to the probable cause statement, around 9:45 PM on March 9, 2023, the Lakeville Police Department received a report that a home was hit by a bullet from a gun. The home was located in the 8600 block of 176th Street West in Lakeville, Minnesota which is next to the Cherry View Elementary School.
When Lakeville Police Officers arrived at the home, they spoke with two adults who resided in the home with their three children. The couple reported that a bullet came through the second story of their home from the back with the bullet coming from the direction of the Elementary School. Lakeville Officers searched the home and found two bullet holes in two upstairs bathrooms. The Officers were also able to locate the bullets that caused the bullet holes. When the incident occurred, it was reported that the adult female and her three children were all upstairs when the bullets entered the home. Lakeville Officers also reportedly spoke with neighbors who had also heard multiple gunshots.
According to the probable cause statement, Lakeville Police Officers then searched the parking lot of the Cherry View Elementary School where they found fresh footprints and tire tracks in the freshly fallen snow. The Police Officers were also able to find two spent 9mm gun bullet casings. Lakeville Police Officers reviewed surveillance video and identified from the video a white pick-up truck in the parking lot around 9:40 PM and two male suspects who got out of the truck and quickly fled the area a few minutes later.
Lakeville Police Officers found a white pickup truck about four days later that matched the one from the video surveillance. According to the probable cause, Lakeville Officers spoke with the driver whom they identified as 19-year-old Gavyn Schraufnagel. According to Schraufnagel, he and his friend, 20-year-old Zachary Krause, went to the school parking lot in his truck after he had recently purchased a new firearm and they wanted to shoot the gun into the snowbank. Schraufnagel reportedly recorded a video of Krause shooting the gun. After Krause had shot the gun, both individuals left the scene. Schraufnagel provided Officers with both the video and the 9mm gun that was used. The casings of the gun matched those found in the home.
Zachary Krause was charged with three felonies:
Dangerous Weapon Violation (Reckless Discharge of Firearm) (Public Housing, School, or Park Zone) which comes with a maximum sentence of 0-5 years and/or $3,000 to $10,000 fine
Dangerous Weapon Violation (Possess Dangerous Weapon on School Property) which comes with a maximum sentence of 0-5 years and/or $3,000 to $10,000 fine
Criminal Damage to Property in the 1st Degree (Foreseeable Risk of Bodily Harm) which comes with a maximum sentence of 0-5 years and/or a $3,000 to $10,000 fine
Gavin Schraufnagel was charged with two felonies:
Dangerous Weapon Violation (Possess Dangerous Weapon on School Property) which comes with a maximum sentence of 0-5 years and/or $3,000 to $10,000 fine
Dangerous Weapon Violation (Reckless Discharge of Firearm) (Public Housing, School, or Park Zone) which comes with a maximum sentence of 0-5 years and/or $3,000 to $10,000 fine
