West St. Paul Man Sentenced to Over 30 Years for Fatal Stabbing at Group Home
WEST ST PAUL, MINNESOTA - A West St. Paul man convicted of fatally stabbing his housemate at an adult group home has been sentenced to 367 months in prison, Dakota County Attorney Kathy Keena announced. Judge Michael Mayer delivered the sentence to 43-year-old John C. Adams II for the murder of 68-year-old David Eugene Rahn. Adams was convicted by a jury of intentional second-degree murder earlier this year. The sentence includes credit for 1,777 days Adams has already served and an order to pay $2,088 in restitution.
The Incident
On February 17, 2020, during the early morning hours, staff at the group home called 911 to report a violent disturbance between Adams and Rahn. The caller said she heard Rahn screaming for help from his bedroom. When West St. Paul police arrived, officers found Rahn unresponsive on the floor of his bedroom, suffering from multiple stab wounds to his neck and back. Officers initiated CPR until medics arrived, but despite their efforts, Rahn was pronounced dead at the scene. A knife, later determined to be the weapon used in the attack, was found discarded in a garbage can near a place of worship across the street from the group home.
An autopsy conducted by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office determined the manner of death to be homicide caused by multiple sharp force injuries. Rahn also suffered defensive wounds on his hands and blunt force trauma to his head.
County Attorney Keena praised the efforts of the West St. Paul Police Department, Inver Grove Heights Police Department, South St. Paul Police Department, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, and the prosecution team led by Chief Deputy Cheri Townsend and Assistant County Attorney Stephen Grego.
“This sentence reflects the severity of this tragic crime and provides some measure of justice for the Rahn family,” Keena said.
