Slippery Roads Lead to Multiple Accidents in Eagan & Apple Valley, MN Saturday Evening
APPLE VALLEY and EAGAN, MINNESOTA - Starting around 3:50 PM on Saturday, December 30, 2023, following a crash on the I-35E southbound ramp from Cedar Avenue, emergency personnel from both the Eagan Fire Department and Apple Valley Fire Department, Minnesota State Patrol, Eagan Police, and Apple Valley Police, and Allina Health and MHealth ambulances would have a busy couple of hours as a mix of freezing rain and light snow resulted in area highways becoming a sheet of ice and very slick conditions causing several accidents.
At around 4:38 PM, calls came into Dakota County Dispatch for a single-vehicle rollover along northbound I-35E just north of County Road 42. This would bring in the Burnsville Fire Department, arriving at the accident around 4:43 PM.
Both north and southbound lanes of Highway 77 (Cedar Avenue) from Apple Valley to Diffley Road had several accidents involving sometimes multiple vehicles. A stretch of I-35E, both north and southbound, also had several wrecks being reported, which caused traffic to slow to a crawl, if not a complete standstill, as salt crews were called in to de-ice several roads across the southern Twin Cities.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Statewide between 6:30 AM on Saturday, December 30th, and 6:30 AM on Sunday, December 31st, there were 339 crashes, with 36 of them being injury accidents. Thankfully, there were no reported serious or fatal crashes. One hundred twenty-two vehicle spinouts were also reported, with five jackknifed semis.
