Large Fire at Historical Fort Snelling - June 2, 2022

A large fire broke out this afternoon at a building at the Historic Fort Snelling in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The building on fire is reported to be the old officers' building, otherwise known as the Upper Post which is located east of the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and southeast of downtown Minneapolis The building was vacant and was being renovated to become a veteran and low-income housing.

The Minneapolis Fire Chief reports that two firefighters sustained minor injuries fighting the fire and that windy conditions this afternoon made fighting the fire difficult. When crews arrived on the scene, the fire was showing through the roof with Minnesota DoT cameras, like the video above, showing a large amount of fire coming from the building. Several crews were on scene fighting the fire this afternoon with the majority of the fire being out around, or just after 4:30 PM Thursday.

The source of the fire is unknown at this time but will be under investigation by the State Fire Marshall’s office according to the Fire Chief. They are not sure if the fire was started by the construction that was ongoing in the building at the time or not.

This is still a developing story and will provide further information as it is available.
