Eagan Police Chief Roger New Announces Retirement After 31 Years of Service

EAGAN, MINNESOTA—The City of Eagan has announced that Eagan Police Chief Roger New plans to retire in the fall of 2025, concluding a remarkable 31-year career with the department, which includes the past seven years as its chief. His retirement will mark the end of a notable era of leadership for one of Minnesota’s most respected suburban police departments.

During his tenure, Chief New earned a reputation for visionary leadership and a deep commitment to public service, innovation, and community trust. Since joining the department in the early 1990s, New rose through the ranks, focusing on modern policing strategies and cultivating a positive organizational culture.

“Chief New has been a steadfast and visionary leader,” said Eagan Mayor Mike Maguire in a statement. “His integrity, professionalism, and commitment to building trust with our community have left a lasting legacy. We are deeply grateful for his service and wish him a well-deserved retirement.”

As chief, New prioritized transparency, community engagement, and internal leadership development. He led efforts to enhance community policing strategies, expand officer wellness initiatives, and strengthen partnerships with residents, businesses, and regional agencies. His leadership helped establish Eagan as a leader in public safety innovation.

Reflecting on his decision to retire, New expressed pride in the department’s growth and evolution during his tenure in leadership.

“While my departure is bittersweet, I’m proud to be leaving at a time when officer wellness and mental health are not an afterthought, the City’s investment in public safety innovation is unmatched, and community support is at an all-time high,” New said. “The department is also built for future success, which wouldn’t be possible without the support of City leadership.”

City officials emphasized that despite the upcoming leadership change, the department’s core values and high standards will remain firmly in place.

“The City of Eagan is committed to a seamless leadership transition and maintaining the high-quality public safety services our community expects and deserves,” said City Administrator Dianne Miller. She noted that the recruitment process for a new police chief is in its early stages, with more information to be released in the coming months.

Chief New will remain in his position through the fall, continuing daily operations and supporting a smooth handoff to his eventual successor. City leaders plan to honor New’s decades of service and his many contributions to the Eagan community in the months ahead.
