BURNSVILLE, MINNESOTA - Officials with the City of Burnsville have confirmed that a shooting did occur late Wednesday night at the Berkshire of Burnsville complex that resulted in the death of a young boy. The shooter in this incident, who is suspected to be the father, is reported to be in critical condition at Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC). The reported shooting occurred around 11:48 PM on June 5, 2024, in a townhome on Echo Park Court.
Jesse Waltman, a resident of the complex, was one of the first to respond to the scene. Waltman recounted hearing the boy’s mother screaming, prompting him to investigate. “She said the word 'baby,' so I ran over,” Waltman said. “The boy was in the doorway, laying down unresponsive.” Waltman immediately called 911 and attempted to assess the boy’s vital signs and provide aid, but due to the extent of the injuries, he was limited in what he could do. Another neighbor confirmed hearing a woman frantically screaming around the same time, and when police arrived, they knew the two were likely related.
Law enforcement continues to investigate why this incident occurred, but it is believed to have been a domestic issue, during which the young boy was shot. According to Waltman, upon seeing the police lights, he reportedly ran to the main road to guide them to the right townhouse and did the same for the arriving medics. The young boy reportedly suffered a serious gunshot wound to the head. Officials unfortunately report that the young boy passed away over the weekend from his injuries.
The second individual who was hurt, we can now confirm from Burnsville City Officials, was the shooter in this incident. According to officials, the shooter is in critical condition at HCMC. It was reported to us by witnesses and confirmed by officials that the second male's injuries were self-inflicted.
The community at Berkshire of Burnsville is in shock, grappling with the aftermath of the violence. Waltman described the ordeal as "the most horrific thing I've ever seen," a sentiment likely shared by many in the usually quiet neighborhood.
