The 128th Boston Marathon: A Historic Race of Inspiration and Local Pride

DAKOTA COUNTY, MINNESOTA—One of the world's oldest and most prestigious annual marathons will be run tomorrow, Monday, April 15, 2024. Its history dates back to 1897, making it the oldest continuously held marathon and one of the six World Marathon Majors. It's infamous for its Heartbreak Hill and the many traditions that have come over the years. That marathon is the 128th Boston Marathon!

The Boston Marathon is held annually on Patriots' Day, a holiday in Massachusetts commemorating the anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the first battles of the American Revolutionary War. This adds to the race's historical significance and festive atmosphere. The Marathon attracts some of the top runners in the world, who compete for prize money and prestige. For many runners, qualifying for and then competing in the Boston Marathon is a lifelong dream and a testament to their dedication, perseverance, and passion for running. The race is a source of inspiration and achievement, motivating countless individuals to push their limits and pursue their goals. The race fosters a sense of camaraderie and pride among participants and spectators alike.

Even if you're not a runner, participating in the Boston Marathon experience fosters a sense of belonging. Whether cheering on friends, supporting local charities, or simply soaking in the atmosphere, you become part of a larger narrative—a story of determination, grit, and triumph.

Local Pride

Among the approximately 30,000 participants who run the Boston Marathon annually, 33 represent our local community and Dakota County. These individuals hail from various cities such as Apple Valley, Burnsville, Eagan, Lakeville, Farmington, and Inver Grove Heights. Their ages range between 19 and 73.

I experienced the Boston Marathon for the first time last year while watching my Father run his first Boston Marathon. It allowed me to experience the city's atmosphere and excitement, and there is nothing like it! Good luck again this year, Dad!

Dakotah Lindwurm, an Eagan resident who also qualified in the Women's Marathon to represent the United States at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, ran the Boston Marathon last year. Lindwurm ran the Boston 5K this year, held on Saturday, April 13th. She placed 15th out of the 5,116 female participants with a time of 16:06. Congratulations, Dakotah!

Good luck to all the runners tomorrow! We will watch the race results and provide updates once they are available. Know someone locally running the Boston Marathon? Please send us any photos or videos! We would love to share them!
