We will end 2021 and begin 20222 with a dynamic and very active weather system that is forecast to impact a large portion of the central United States this weekend from Oklahoma to Arkansas to Illinois and Minnesota. While just east across the Lower Mississippi Valley, severe storms including the threat of excessive rain and flooding, tornadoes, damaging winds, and hail could be possible. Finally, the Twin Cities, Minnesota area is forecast to see some of the coldest temperatures so far this season as wind chill advisories and warnings blanket the state. Wind chills could reach as low as 40 below zero at times.
Wintery weather including freezing rain, snow, and sleet will be possible across parts of the state of Oklahoma with temperatures dropping around 20 to 30 degrees below average could be possible across parts of the Central Plains.
Across the Midwest, a New Years Day winter storm will bring the Chicagoland its first big snowstorm of the 2021-2022 winter season. Upwards of 5-9” could be possible across the Greater Chicago area with 4-8” being possible across the rest of Northern Illinois.
Across the Lower Mississippi Valley, including parts of Arkansas, severe storms including the threat of excessive rain, flooding, tornadoes, damaging winds, and hail could be possible.
This threat is forecast to then shift east on Sunday and impact are portions of the Southeastern United States.
